Another excellent book by Halberstam. His insights into social power dynamics make this book a compelling addition to what I'm sure is an already a crowded field of Michael Jordan biographies. I read this book as a fan of the author rather than the subject and came away a bigger fan of both. Don't ignore this book simply because you don't like sports (you bookish nerds).
As anyone who's familiar with David Halberstam's work can attest, you're hard pressed to find a better written dissection of nearly any topic unless it was by Halberstam himself..which given his attachment to certain subjects, is a possibility. Simply put, Halberstam was such a talented writer, that he was capable of making the most mundane events and details fascinating. When comparing Playing for Keeps with The Breaks of the Game, his early 80s dissection of the Portland Trailblazers though the former was probably a greater literary accomplishment, Playing for Keeps was a more interesting read for me. A large part of this is the subject matter, Michael Jordan, who established himself, in the most pathological of fashions as the greatest NBA player of all time. However as interesting of a feature as MJ is, if you're reading this book, you probably don't need a primer on Michael Jordan's greatness. What sets this book apart is the detailed descriptions of what the NBA became economically in the 1990s.One if the many things that is great about Halberstam is his no stones left unturned approach to any subject matter. In spite of omitting much of Michael Jordan's personal life from this book, I feel that reading this provides a clear picture of Michael, and even more so the climate of the NBA in the 1990's, which is the exact started purpose of the book. In it, you'll likely read tidbits regarding the 90s Bulls that you will not have seen elsewhere, and you'll gain unique perspective to how the league flourished in the 80s and 90s, and the ramifications of that success.I read this book immediately after reading The Breaks of the Game, and doing so really added great perspective for not just understanding the league, but also Halberstam's unique writing perspective. In truth both are kind of geared toward a niche market: NBA diehards and/or David Halberstam loyalists. If you have an interest in league history, TBOTG is worth your time, however if you were to only read one Playing for Keeps is far less obscure and dated. Having devoured just about any and every NBA book on the market, I can day without question that DH's writing is far superior to anyone else who has attempted. Highly recommended.
If you like the NBA, and even if your team to the Bulls, you can't help but to admire what MJ was able to accomplish. Now if only be had been a Blazer...
Michael Jordan is fascinating to think about. He was at one time the world's most famous person, and surprisingly he seemed to deserve all that fame, money, and recognition. He dominated a sport like no one had dominated anything before him, and he displayed amazing self-control in keeping his private life out of the news (except for a minor gambling problem). As David Halberstam shows in this Jordan biography, he is not so fascinating to read about.Michael Jordan is an extremely focused, disciplined, and competitive individual. He wanted to win, and he only cared about winning. He worked harder than everyone else in basketball, and he wanted the championships more than anyone else in basketball. This (and that minor thing about his superb athletic ability) assured his ascent in basketball. There was only one setback in Jordan's remarkable career (the murder of his father), and so Jordan's biography does not make for an interesting read.Halberstam wisely parallels Jordan's rise with the NBA's rise. Jordan was the man of the moment because the NBA badly needed a man of the moment. Jordan's ascent also propelled Nike, the Chicago Bulls, Jordan's teammates and coach into the stratosphere. The major problem with the book is that it's too much hagiography. Halberstam is in complete awe of Jordan, a state of mind made possible in that Halberstam could not interview Jordan for this book.
This is a book about a nearly textbook case of a type A personality. Michael Jordan is the consummate perfectionist and competitor. From his early days as an unknown kid at Laney High in Wilmington to his days with Dean Smith at Carolina to his days of scoring championships and NBA titles with the Bulls, this book has the entire history, and it makes fascinating reading. What comes through much more clearly by putting his entire history together than it does even in watching a game like the one he scored 40-something against Utah when he had the flu, is how intense a competitor Jordan is, how he needs to win, how if you think you can beat him you are, you have *got* to be wrong. Golf course, basketball court, baseball diamond, wherever, Michael Jordan had to be the best. Combine such a drive with a good understanding of certain dynamics and a 6'6 frame with only 4 percent bodyfat, and you've got yourself a ballplayer.Occasionally I was bored by some of the more financial aspects of Jordan's career, but the light that it sheds on the intensity of his personality is illuminating.
This is easily one of the best sports books of all-time. Halberstam recreates a world that now seems ancient and does so by relaying interesting insights and stories about Michael Jordan and those he played with, and against. The growth of Nike and the NBA made for very compelling reading as did the sections on Dean Smith's North Carolina teams, Larry Bird's Boston Celtics teams, and Isiah Thomas' Detroit Pistons teams. Halberstam's movement of sections into a non-linear narrative is highly effective.
I am not a member of the Jordan generation so it was fun to learn about him. In addition sufficient information is provided about the surrounding influences that added to my learning experience.
